Types of Marks

Although the word "trademark" frequently is used generically, the federal Lanham Act of Title 15 U.S.C.  recognizes several different types of marks that may be registered on the Principal Register.

Trademarks: Trademarks protect goods.

Service marks: Service marks protect services.

Certification marks: Frequently used by someone other than the owner but use of which is controlled by the owner in order to certify origin, material, mode of manufacture, quality, accuracy or other characteristic of goods and services.

Collective marks: Used by members of a cooperative, association or other group or organization to indicate membership in a union, association or other organization.
